Reviewing Geometry review sites

Recently, as I was about to teach a class in Geometry, a review class, I came across several sites that were helpful to my students and me. Most of these sites had good sets of review problems for the entire course of HS geometry. I managed to use some of these to plan a lesson of review for the final test in geometry. Here is where I began, http://www.iq.poquoson.org/EOCgeo02v5.htm

This site gives a multiple choice version of review and at the end diagnosis of your knowledge.

Another site of review for the heavy vocabulary that geometry holds is a flash card vocab site. http://www.flashcardexchange.com/flashcards/view/356629

The last site I used was a link to review worksheets (pdf) http://www.hilltoplancers.org/stories/geomsemrev1.pdf

All of these sites were helpful and full of good review questions. As a math teacher, the hardest thing is finding a good resource for your students to be able to use as a guide to understanding the subject beyond what you teach in class.

The last source for any math teaching or standards teaching is of course the CA standards site Here you can find old test questions that align to the standards. Good Luck Teaching

Have you heard of Cool Math?

The website coolmath.com is a great resource for math teachers and students alike. I use it for new interesting tips to improve my general teaching, as well as for lessons and practice worksheets. It also is a good source for continuing education ideas. The drawback of this site is that it is geared to lower levels of math (middle school or below). I still find interesting tips and ideas for my high school classes. Right now the site is featuring an excellent article on a new way to teach algebra called Survivor Algebra. It explains in great detail how to motivate your students and what to change in your teaching.

Educational Blogging

This is an ever increasing technology that education has found and is using on a regular basis. I am a math teacher and the love the idea of using a blog in my curriculum but how do I do this? My subject is not about writing, many things are computational. How do I find ways to use this technology in math (geometry and algebra 2)?

Well first I have been perusing many blogs and educational blogs. I have come across many ways they are used in humanities/English and any class where you discuss things. I can learn from David Kuropatwa blogs. Take a look at his pre-cal blog pc40s.blogspot.com He uses the blog site as a website that elicits feedback from his students. He is also an avid blogger of many topics on math education check out his blog here called a difference. Check out his poem of the differences that teachers make, I agree that every parent should read this. Blogging is a meaningful way to get your thoughts down and receive comments on them. The best site I can refer you to for cool innovative blogging in education ids the award winners. Another blogger that seems to write about education and what’s happening in the field with generation z has great insight.

A Look at Math.com

During my time her in this blog I will take a look at the many wonders the web has to offer math teachers. Here is a site for math teachers that has so many wonderful treasures to share with our students but you could get lost in the mix.

Things I liked…The site has many math topics organized by subject matter (i.e. algebra, geometry, etc). It has has a place for homework help, practice, calculator tools, tutors, games and a store. It’s best feature is the practice. Here there are many online questions to review and quiz a specific topic with your students. For example, I looked up circle in geometry and the basic definitions to the chords and central angle relationships came up in a format of a quiz.

Things that need to be improved…

The layout is quite busy and confusing. It is very text heavy and the main body of the home site is not useful. You really rely on the navigation to figure out where you are and need to go, because when you click to something, the body looks the same and the only new material is found by scrolling down. The practice page needs instant feedback on the quizzes that are taken. I found that the other information on this site (tools, tutors, etc) is really not helpful. I will be reviewing more sites that give much more in a friendly easy to use format.

Thanks to staying tuned!

Ciao
